Woolworths

Woolworths

When I was a kid there was Sears, JC Penny, Woolworths, Montgomery Ward, and K Mart. Sears and JC Penny were the biggest for a long time. Now you know that Walmart is the big cheese today and Woolworth's and Montgomery Ward are gone.

Woolworths still exists in England, they have 815 stores, and in August Woolworths rejected a 50 million pound offer for its retail division from Iceland Foods Ltd. Today Woolworth's announced

‘’The board can confirm that it is in preliminary discussions regarding a possible offer for the retail business,'’ the company, hit hard by a slowdown in consumer spending from the economic downturn, said in a statement.

‘’There can be no assurance that any offer will be forthcoming,'’ it added

The company is not related to Sydney-based Woolworths Ltd. or South Africa’s Woolworths Holdings Ltd.

What do you suppose would have happened if we'd bailed out Woolworths, Montgomery Ward, and K Mart in the U.S.? Do you suppose we'd have Walmart and Target and Kohls and Dicks's today?
